How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF

  1. Choose one PDF from your device.
  2. Select one of the six page-number positions.
  3. Set the first physical PDF page to number and its starting number.
  4. Select Add Page Numbers, then download the validated PDF.

Choose a Page Number Position

Place numbers at the top or bottom, aligned left, center, or right. Bottom Center is selected by default.

Set the Starting Page Number

Numbering uses plain decimal numbers. Choose a whole starting number from 1 to 999999; the final number must also stay within that limit.

Skip a Cover Page

Set Start numbering from PDF page to 2 to leave the first physical page unnumbered. Numbering then continues on every remaining page.

Number Portrait and Landscape PDFs

Placement is calculated separately for each page's visible area, so portrait and landscape pages can be numbered in the same document.

Page Numbers on Rotated and Mixed-Size Pages

The tool accounts for standard page rotations, mixed dimensions, CropBox boundaries, and non-zero page-box origins when positioning each number.

PDF Quality and Existing Content

Numbers are added as a transparent text overlay without intentionally rasterizing, resizing, or reflowing pages. The overlay may cover existing text or artwork near the selected position.

Links, Forms, Metadata, and Digital Signatures

Common links, forms, and metadata may remain when the PDF is saved, but preservation of every advanced PDF feature is not guaranteed. Modifying a signed PDF can invalidate its digital signature.

PDF Limits and Password-Protected Files

  • 25 MiB maximum input

  • Password-protected PDFs are unsupported

Can I number a password-protected PDF?

No. Remove the password before using this tool.

Controlled tests preserved common examples, but preservation of every advanced PDF feature is not guaranteed.
