JPG is widely used for photographs and other compressed images. WebP is another image format designed for efficient web delivery. Converting JPG to WebP can reduce file size for some images, depending on the source image and the selected WebP quality.
JPG and WebP can both use lossy compression. JPG is widely used for photographs, while WebP is designed for efficient image delivery on the web. WebP also supports features such as transparency, although converting a normal JPG to WebP does not create transparent areas.
Higher WebP quality generally retains more image detail but can produce larger files. Lower quality can reduce file size while introducing more compression artifacts. Savezly uses 90% as the default quality setting.
The final WebP is not guaranteed to be smaller than the original JPG. Results depend on the source image, its existing JPEG compression, browser encoder, and selected quality.
At the default 90% setting, the browser re-encodes the decoded JPG pixels using WebP compression. Because the JPG source may already contain lossy compression and the WebP output may also use lossy compression, some additional image information can be discarded during conversion.
Converting to WebP does not restore detail already lost from the original JPEG.
